Tree-O Update 2

Here’s another guest post. This time from Shady Hill School grade four teacher Drew Mackay:

We’re in week three of our CCC at Shady Hill, and my students are willing and eager to cancel as many as they can!  The Tree-O CCC project with BB&N and Park has been a wonderful success so far and we’re very happy to be combining our efforts with other fourth grade classes in the area.  Anne Scribner, one of my fourth grade colleagues, did this project with her class last year and canceled over 600 catalogs!  This year, we have combined all three sections of fourth grade in hopes to cancel 800 catalogs.  In two weeks we have already reached 501! And the “Tree-O” of schools is now at 1,610!!

When my colleagues and I first introduced the CCC to our students at Shady Hill many of them asked, “Isn’t easier to just recycle the catalogs?  Why do we have to cancel them?”  When we brought up the idea that canceling catalogs  preserves energy, reduces pollution, and saves trees from being cut down there were several Ooohs and Aaahs.  It made sense to them and they were eager to get started.

One parent remarked, “My son comings home everyday asking if there are any catalogs to cancel.  We find it so inspiring that he has taken the task of canceling quite independently.  We have forwarded the information on to all our email contacts and have gotten several comments on what an awesome project this is.  Thank you for introducing it to us!”

Since the project began, we created a display bin to show our efforts and spread the word throughout our school.  Also, we are incorporating the data into math lessons and our everyday conversations.  We hope to get others in our community involved as well.  One of our parents has been collecting and canceling catalogs sent to our front desk on a weekly basis for a year now.   We appreciate the efforts the Park School has done to get this initiative moving forward.  It’s a wonderful way for us to contribute and know we are making a difference.  Thank you!

Tree-O Update 1

Today we have a special guest post from BB&N grade four teacher Jenny Weymouth:

BB&N, Shady Hill, and Park fourth graders have joined together to stop unwanted catalogs from filling up our mailboxes. After hearing about the CCC which started at Park, BB&N teachers contacted Shady Hill and Park to see if we could join together for a good cause. Our three schools started their challenge, now called the “Tree-O Catalog Canceling Challenge” on Tuesday. This first week all three fourth grades have canceled over 460 unwanted catalogs. Each school has a different goal, but together we hope to cancel around 2,000 catalogs.

Already, students and parents are excited about this project. One BB&N parent said, “Our daughter is SO EXCITED about the environmental unit you are working on at school. She comes home everyday talking about what she has learned and is encouraging us to make changes. We love it too! I REALLY love how excited she is to cancel all the catalogs we get.” On the  first morning after the challenge began, another student came in to class exclaiming that he had canceled five catalogs on his own and had another twelve to do! The excitement is spreading and together we can make a difference.
