Flordia and Kansas

More resutls are coming in!

1 - The “Recycling Rangers” at Poinciana Elementary in Key West, Florida just finished up their CCC. 26 third graders canceled 481 catalogs. They saved 6 trees and almost 6,000 gallons of water. Special props to Mr. Hodges’ class (below) for canceling 82. And thanks to Nancy Coward for helping organize.

2 - Girl Scout Troop 1139 leader Amy Isenburg from Prairie Village, Kansas sent in this photo of her green girls!

Amy writes, “Troop 1139 collected and canceled catalogs as part of their “Eco-Action” merit badge. They told neighbors and family members about the project and watched the catalogs roll in for a full month. They collected 96 catalogs. We have canceled and recycled them. This is a great project. I hope it keeps spreading. I found canceling the catalogs almost addictive on CatalogChoice.org!”

Emma S. of Prairie Elementary says, “Canceling catalogs is a great and fun way to save the environment with your troop!” To top off the badge, they planted trees at a Girl Scout camp to help replace the trees wiped out in the world by catalog manufacturing.” Way to go 1139!

3 - Some Cub Scouts from Long Island, New York contacted me to ask if Cub Scouts can join. Absolutely. Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, elementary schools, high schools, soccer teams, churches, ANYONE! All are welcome. In fact, a whole town in New Jersey might join. It’s a fabulous, free, and easy project leading up to Earth Day on April 22, if you’re looking…

Tree-O Update 4

Working together as a “Tree-O” of schools, 149 Park, Shady Hill, and BB&N fourth graders have canceled 4,323 unwanted sales catalogs!! That’s a 33 foot pile (if we could stack one that high). If we add in Park’s 3rd and 5th graders (another 1,619 catalogs), our three schools canceled 5,944 catalogs in 30 days. That saves 76 trees, 71,000 gallons of water, and reduces energy use and pollution from making paper equal to taking 2.8 cars off the road. Not bad TREE-O! (See our RESULTS page for details.)

Check out our creative anti-catalog art made from … you guessed it … catalogs! The first is from Shady Hill School.

Here a message made from a few of BB&N’s 1,391 canceled catalogs!

Tree-O Update 3

With only 2 days to go, BB&N, Shady Hill, and Park 4th graders are finishing strong! Last week we smashed our goal of 2,000 by reaching 2,805!! Can we cancel 4,000? Three photos to show the green energy flowing in our schools right now:

1 - Brave Shady Hill teacher Drew Mackay told his 4th grade if they could cancel 800 catalogs this month, he’d dye his hair and beard green for a day. The kids got their easily! Perhaps if they get to 1,600 Mr. Mackay should use permanent dye? (Click on images to enlarge them!)

2 - Check out what BB&N had to do with their Tree-O graph when they passed our goal. They got creative and used the ceiling. So cool.

3 - Two Park 4th grade girls made this simple, yet powerful 40 foot long message with 200 catalogs when counting last week. Message and medium became one.
