Our First California School!

Today’s post was written by Kate’s 2nd graders at The Children’s School in La Jolla, CA (near San Diego). Thanks to Laura Lavoie, Lauren Karkenny, and Carrie Orsborn for organizing! Their strategy was having the entire school collect cats for several weeks, then 50 student members of their Green Team and 15 teachers canceled 850 catalogs on April 19-22.

“Hello from California! We were really excited about the CCC. Each class tried to bring in as many catalogs as they could. Kids in toddlers through sixth grade brought in catalogs and put them in a box by their classrooms. The Green Team counted all the catalogs in each class’s box. They wanted to see who had the most and who won our challenge. The whole school collected 1,595 catalogs, and the second grade brought in 328 catalogs. The second grade won our challenge (click on photo)!”

“Then, during Earth Week, The Green Team and other people at school canceled 850 catalogs and it helped the environment. The challenge is important because it saves water, trees, electricity, carbon dioxide, pollution, gas, oil, and us.

“Facts we learned from the CCC: We saved six trees. Canceling catalogs helps the environment. Riding your bike or walking can save energy, too. You can cancel your own catalogs at home. Thank you for starting the Catalog Canceling Challenge. We had lots of fun!”

Earth Day Poems

My students wrote these poems Earth Day Morning, edited and practiced reading yesterday, and we filmed today during a nature walk. During our walk we got to watch an Eastern Ribbon Snake sunbathe then swim in a stream.

5/3 UPDATE: My mom watched this video and was inspired to write the poem below.

dear earth,
thank you for a small triangle of light on the hayfield before the sunset turns mt. kearsarge purple.
thank you for a moon rising huge out of the ocean at plum
thank you for the scent of magnolia at dawn and the sound of peepers at dusk,
the sound in winter of trees swaying in the winter woods,
the scent of freshly cut hay in summer.
thank you for the light shafts coming through the barn sides onto the center floor at the equinox and the noisy birds inside to welcome it.
and too for the oriole returning each spring, the beaches of scotia, the meadows of montana, the hills of missouri and our beautiful woods in nh.
so much gratitude.

SNL Ad Against Junk Mail

What I’ve been attempting for two years, SNL does in under three minutes. They shred the thin paper that is the Direct Mail Industry, then recycle it against them with this parody. No, it’s not “Junk Mail,” it’s “Fun Surprise Mail!” Pass it on.

It comes from CrooksAndLiars.com.

New York Times…NOT

Ugg. What disappointment. After six months of working on an OpEd about the catalog problem, my wife and I had ours accepted to the New York Times on Monday. Then it was pulled at the last second before getting into today’s paper.

This is extremely hard to do (it’s like me making the NE Patriots), but somehow (probably the help of my wife’s writing skills), our essay was selected! I went back and forth with an NYT editor yesterday afternoon to get it polished for today’s paper. At 4:55, five minutes before it was to go to the copy editor, it was rejected. Crushing news.

They found I repeated similar “phrases, language, and figures” in a Huffington Post article I wrote December. This is true. It’s called “recycling” of one’s own work. It’s like plagiarizing yourself. I just didn’t know that wasn’t allowed. But I’ll try again and will keep it fresh and totally original. I have one new image that will blow your mind. Or make you cry? But I won’t write it here. Hopefully you’ll read it in a major paper soon.

Six PA Schools Report!

Jason Palo from Charles Patton Middle School in Unionville, PA helped organize CCCs in six different schools from his district! Jason should get some kind of serious “Tree Saver Award” for his efforts. Their results are in:

Unionville Elementary canceled 473.
Pocopson Elementary canceled 269.
Chadds Ford Elementary canceled 235.

Jason writes, “That is a lot of trees, water, and energy saved! This is a big step in the right direction. Thank you so much for helping to make a difference in this world and for making this a big success. We will never truly know the real total of our efforts as I continue to hear stories of how one person told another, who told another. This is surely something to be proud of.”

Earth Day Sheet

David Lawton and I designed this Earth Day worksheet. It’s a two night homework assignment. When it comes back, discuss students’ thoughts for each section. Best of all, implement some of their green ideas as class projects. Can any tie in to your curriculum? Other ideas include cutting out their drawings to make a display or using one of the prompts as a jump off point for a writing project. Click here to download the sheet.

Special thanks to Mrs. Pipitone’s 7th graders who helped organize the CCC and counted all the catalogs! And to Debra Wentworth and Laurel Earnshaw, the brave leaders of Daisy Troop 24902! You will have saved over 7 trees and 7,000 gallons of water in one year’s time.
