New York Times…NOT

Ugg. What disappointment. After six months of working on an OpEd about the catalog problem, my wife and I had ours accepted to the New York Times on Monday. Then it was pulled at the last second before getting into today’s paper.

This is extremely hard to do (it’s like me making the NE Patriots), but somehow (probably the help of my wife’s writing skills), our essay was selected! I went back and forth with an NYT editor yesterday afternoon to get it polished for today’s paper. At 4:55, five minutes before it was to go to the copy editor, it was rejected. Crushing news.

They found I repeated similar “phrases, language, and figures” in a Huffington Post article I wrote December. This is true. It’s called “recycling” of one’s own work. It’s like plagiarizing yourself. I just didn’t know that wasn’t allowed. But I’ll try again and will keep it fresh and totally original. I have one new image that will blow your mind. Or make you cry? But I won’t write it here. Hopefully you’ll read it in a major paper soon.
