Catalog Canceling Challenge
by Lily and Melinda

Wow!! That’s totally awesome! The Park School’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade just canceled 4,175 catalogs in the first ever Catalog Canceling Challenge! In one year’s time we will have saved 47 trees, 25,050 gallons of water, and 2.5 cars worth of energy.

The Catalog Canceling Challenge lasted 1 month, and then we counted all the catalogs up. This is how: We counted small piles of 25 catalogs. We would weigh them and mark down 1 tally every time we weighed one pile. We had a total of 167 tallies and then we multiplied 167 by 25 to add up to our grand total of 4,125!!!!!

The night after, our teacher, Mr. Wells, did a lot of math. In the end, there were a lot of high numbers. We thought the numbers weren’t going to be that big. But bigger numbers are much better. All together, we had a 31 foot tall pile, if we piled them up, 1,117 lbs., and 167 tallies.

This is important because it saves energy, trees, water, and it helps the earth. Help us cancel catalogs by going to Catalogchoice.org, log in, and just answer their questions that follow. This is good because it helps the Earth. Reduce, reuse, recycle! It’s educational, it’s simple, and it’s also fun.

Catalog Canceling Complete!
By David

Kids are saving our planet, are you? At The Park School, Brookline Massachusetts, the third, fourth, and fifth graders just finished the Catalog Canceling Challenge on November, 30, 2007.

They ended up canceling an amazing amount of 4,175 catalogs in total. The third grade canceled 1,700 catalogs. Following that number was fourth grade canceling 1,450 catalogs. Last but not least, was fifth grade canceling 1,025 catalogs.

They canceled 1,117 pounds of catalogs which is enough energy to take 2.5 cars off the road. They also saved 47 trees (if each catalog doesn’t show 4 times).

The students worked for one month, to cancel as many catalogs as they could. One kid claims that he canceled 81 catalogs. They saved about 25,050 gallons of water. That’s almost enough to bathe someone for their life. If all of these catalogs were stacked in one pile, the pile would be 31 feet tall. The kids did the math, and if each kid canceled the same amount of catalogs, each kid would have canceled a total of 28.6 catalogs.

Here at The Park School, in Brookline, Massachusetts, we are canceling many catalogs. We had a Catalog Canceling Challenge for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.

3rd grade came in first followed by 4th. 5th came in last. 3rd grade got 1,700 catalogs. 4th grade got 1,450 catalogs. 5th grade got 1,025 catalogs. Total we canceled 4,175 catalogs.

We canceled them because we wanted to save trees. In about one year, we will have saved 47 trees! We also canceled them because we don’t need them and to save water and energy.

After the contest we hope that everyone is still canceling! And we all plan to!!!!!!! How about you????

Challenge Complete!

The third, fourth and fifth graders at The Park School just finished the Catalog Canceling Challenge on November 30, 2007. They ended up canceling 4,175 catalogs in total!!

The third grade canceled 1,700 catalogs. Following that number was fourth grade canceling 1,450 catalogs. Last, but not least, was fifth grade canceling 1,025 catalogs. We canceled 1,117 pounds of catalogs. A year from now we will have saved 47 trees.

We started with three bins to put canceled catalogs into and ended up with nine! Mr. Wells, a fourth grade teacher said, “I was stunned by the energy and commitment the students brought to this project. They are helping the planet! I had to build so many bins to keep up with them.”

Many forth graders are shocked. “I think it is wickedly awesome that my classmates and I canceled this many catalogs,” said Melinda a fourth grade student. Jamie, another forth grade student says, “I think it is a great way for kids to learn the importance of helping the planet.”

The fourth and fifth graders are happy for the third graders because they canceled so many catalogs. Our new challenge is to take on other schools in a Catalog Canceling Competition. Would any other schools like to challenge the catalog canceling captains?!
