The Math Behind These Numbers
(according to the National Wildlife Federation)
* 312 catalogs come from one tree (producing 19B catalogs comes from 61M trees per year in USA). Canceling one catalog saves at least four from being produced in the next year. Cats x 4 / 312=
** It takes 3 gallons of water to make each catalog (producing 19B catalogs uses 59B gallons of water per year in USA.) Cats x 4 x 3=
*** To find out how many pounds of CO2 emissions are prevented, you multiply each pound of catalog paper by 1.44. If you don’t know your poundage, assume each catalog is .25 pounds. Remember to assume conservitively that each canceled catalog won’t return four times. Cats x.25 x 4 x 1.44=
**** The emissions of 1 car per year = the production of 8,600 catalogs (producing 19B catalogs uses the annual energy equivalent of 2.2M cars). Cats x 4 / 8,600=
