Go with your parent or guardian to the circulation desk of your nearest library and show them a picture ID and proof of current address. Young children must be able to print their names on the application. Children under 12 must have the signature of a parent or guardian. Children over 12 do not need a signature, but can still use a parent’s ID.
The library card entitles you to borrow books from all libraries in a regional network, and to use library services on the internet, such as information databases. If you are 13 and have a library card, you can sign up online for a Boston Public Library eCard, which allows you immediate access to the BPL’s electronic resources. After 6 months you’ll need to visit the BPL to upgrade to a standard library card. Any resident of Massachusetts can have a BPL library card.
