The Diversity Committee plans presentations, discussions, and events that address the opportunities and challenges associated with our diverse community. Our three forums are designed to help parents gain the tools needed to better communicate with our children and each other about our similarities and differences and to celebrate the diversity within our school. Topics have included, but are not limited to the diversity of culture, race, religion, economics, family structure, and sexual orientation.
Our Fall Forum called "The Many Faces of Adoption" was lead and facilitated by Sally Haslanger, Professor of Philosophy and Director of Women's and Gender Studies at MIT. She is the adoptive mother of two children and co-author of "Adoption Matters," which can be found in the Park School library. It was a very enlightening evening and Sally has agreed to come back to Park to talk with our faculty.
Anne Harvey Kilburn, an adoptive parent of two Park School students has started an affinity group for Park families touched by adoption. For further information, please contact her at aharveykilburn@comcast.net.
Our Winter Forum, Wednesday, January 27th 7-9pm will be an open meeting lead by the Board of Trustees and the administration to present and discuss the results of the recent Assessment on Inclusiveness and Multiculturalism (A.I.M.) survey.
Topics for the Spring Forum are still being discussed.
The P.A. Diversity Committee also co-sponsors with the library author and illustrator visits for students. This fall, Chinese American author and illustrator Grace Lin spoke with the 2nd and 3rd graders. Another author/illustrator visit is in the works for the spring.
All Park parents are invited to attend and participate in committee meetings and forums.
