The Nursery program enlarges the world of young children and increases their ability to cope with its new and varied dimensions. One of the most important goals of the program is for children to engage joyously in cooperative work and play. Taking into consideration each childs' particular interests and strengths, teachers provide developmentally appropriate activities that make use of a variety of media, dramatic play, and manipulative materials. The Nursery program lays a strong foundation for future learning in Kindergarten, particularly in the areas of language arts, social studies and mathematics. Teachers guide each child's growing cognitive and social skills, while paying close attention to development of self-esteem and acceptance of others.
Program Objectives: Kindergarten
Kindergarten provides an enriching environment where each child can continue to find success and enjoy learning. Throughout the year, self-awareness and sensitivity to others are emphasized. As five- and six-year-olds begin to perceive and internalize the world around them, their abilities to deal with new ideas and concepts increase. Kindergarten provides opportunities for more formalized instruction in language arts, social studies, mathematics and science. By experiencing group and individual activities that are both teacher-directed and child-directed, students are encouraged to grow within a framework that is stimulating and supportive.
Program Objectives: Grades I-V
The program in the elementary grades gives each child a strong grounding in mathematics and language arts, and in skills and concepts of other curricular areas: science, social studies, art, music and physical education. There is a balance between individual and group work in a flexible, yet directed, atmosphere. Teachers work to strengthen qualities of self-reliance, self-discipline, self-motivation, and respect for others in each child. While placing a high value upon each child's natural spontaneity and curiosity, the School works to instill in all students a respect for high standards of excellence and for individual differences.
Program Objectives: Grades VI-IX
Within a rigorous and dynamic curriculum, Upper School teachers maintain high academic standards for their students. Students learn to read, write and think both logically and critically. They study English, mathematics, science, social studies, a foreign language, growth education, music, art and physical education. Students, under the supervision of advisors and coaches, also undertake a wide range of extracurricular endeavors. Each student is helped to develop self-confidence, to take responsibility, and to learn from working with others. Mutual respect between students and faculty underlies a demanding academic program of concept and skill development.
