Land Acknowledgement

The Park School is located on the tribal homelands of the Massachusett Nation, which they called “Shawmut.” In the Algonquian language Massachusetts means “people of great hills,” which refers to the Blue Hills.

We honor the Massachusetts Nation for having been stewards to this land for generations. We extend our respect to elders of the past, present, and future.

Descendants of the Massachusett Nation continue to inhabit the Greater Boston area, but they are not a federally recognized nation. We acknowledge the continuing presence of the Massachusett, and the neighboring Wampanoag and Nipmuc peoples.

With this Land Acknowledgement, we formally recognize and respect Indigenous Peoples as traditional stewards of this land and the enduring relationship that exists between Indigenous Peoples and their traditional territories. We recognize the violence committed in the name of this country that has allowed us to be here. We commit to listening and to amplifying voices of Indigenous Peoples.
