Announcing Park's Next Head of School, Scott Young

The Park School Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the appointment, by unanimous vote, of Scott M. Young as the fourteenth Head of School, effective July 1, 2018. Scott currently serves as Dean of Faculty at Marin Academy in San Rafael, CA, and brings two decades of exceptional achievement to Park as a strategic, compassionate, and effective leader at three nationally recognized independent schools. Scott’s appointment represents the culmination of a comprehensive national search that began in October of 2016.

The Search Committee is a sub-committee of the Board of Trustees whose members offer a diverse set of experiences and points of view. All members of the Search Committee will be involved in managing the ongoing search process, meeting candidates, and ultimately making a recommendation to the Board of Trustees.   • Will Park's Mission or Philosophy change with a new Head of School?

    No. The School’s mission has been thoughtfully developed and evolved over time. An important factor in evaluating thenext Head of School will be the degree to which the candidates understand, support, and can enhance our mission.
  • What is the timeline for the search?

    December 2016Search Consultant is selected.
    Winter / Spring 2017Search Committee and Search Consultant engage the community to define the requirements for the next Head of School.
    Winter / Spring 2017Creation of a document that profiles Park and describes the Head of School position for distribution to potential candidates. Begin candidate recruiting.
    Summer 2017Continue candidate recruiting and interviews. This is a highly confidential phase of the search.
    Late Summer/Early Fall 2017Conduct interviews with semi-finalists.
    Early Fall 2017Conduct interviews with finalists.
    Fall 2017Search Committee recommends a final candidate to the Board.
    July 2018New Head of School takes office.
  • What is the role of the Board of Trustees in the search?

    The Board is responsible for selecting the next Head of School. The Board will formally vote to extend an offer to the next head. This is one of the most important roles that the Board plays for the School. Like much of the work that the Board of Trustees does, the detailed task of conducting the search will be undertaken by a committee: the Head of School Search Committee.
  • How were Search Committee members selected?

    Search Committee members were selected from the Board of Trustees and the faculty & staff. They offer a diverse set of experiences and points of view as well as a strong degree of commitment to and involvement in the School. All members are dedicated to the process and have committed to devoting a significant amount of time to the search.
  • What is the role of the Search Committee?

    The Board has charged the search committee to perform the following:
    • Interview and select a search consultant best suited to achieve Park’s search objectives
    • Communicate the search progress to the Park community
    • Engage, listen to and learn from all Park constituents to define the qualities required of the next Head of School
    • Identify and document the leadership competencies, professional experiences, and personal qualities required of the next head
    • Develop a deep and highly qualified pool of applicants
    • Effectively and enthusiastically portray Park to candidates
    • Conduct a highly professional screening, interviewing, and reference-checking process
    • Recommend an outstanding candidate to the Board
    • Develop and shepherd a competitive employment contract for the new head
    • Ensure an effective transition process once the new head has been selected
  • Will the Head of School search impact my child's experience at Park?

    Cynthia Harmon, the Park Faculty & Staff, and the Board of Trustees are committed to ensuring that each child has a fulfilling academic and student experience during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years. The Head of School Search will have little or no visibility with the students until a candidate is announced.
  • Will the search impact the faculty's time in the classrooms or the administration's time and availability?

    No. While the faculty and administration’s input will be sought throughout the head search process, it will not intrude on classroom time. Park has significant experience in completing project work while also ensuring that day-to-day school operations are functioning at a high level.
  • How will the Search Committee keep the community updated?

    You can expect periodic communication from the search committee throughout the process. It is important to note that most of the search process must be confidential, and that will shape the communication.

  • How can I help during the search?

    This winter, we will ask members of the Park community to share their opinions. Broad community input will be critical to effectively define the leadership, professional and personal qualities required in the new head.
